Path to Success Scholarship
Overview
The Path to Success Scholarship supports single parents who are economically and educationally disadvantaged but are determined to obtain a college degree so they may improve their family’s long-term economic stability. The scholarship was founded as a partnership between the University of Massachusetts Boston, Metropolitan Boston Housing Partnership (MBHP) and Beacon Hill Property Group.
Objective
The objective of the scholarship is to provide sufficient funds for eligible students to attend UMass Boston. Students will be awarded a scholarship in the amount of $4,000 annually ($2,000 from private funds and $2,000 in matching funds from UMass Boston) for the school term commencing in September. The award will supplement financial aid and loans. The scholarship committee anticipates that the combination of financial aid, loans and the $4,000 scholarship will cover the full cost of tuition.
The scholarship will be renewable (subject to compliance with the program’s continuing eligibility requirements) for up to four consecutive years. Also, there will be vocational assistance provided to ensure that each scholar secure gainful and relevant employment experience between academic years as well as upon graduation.
Ongoing Support
MBHP will provide housing and other appropriate stabilization services to the award recipients. UMass will provide counseling and academic support. Ultimately, the scholars will be expected to work toward financial independence and will work with an Advisor from MBHP to establish goals, responsibilities, timelines and a specific plan of action. MBHP and UMass will maintain continuous contact with the scholars throughout the program.
